The book's plot was structured in this way because it allowed the reader to figure out what each character had to go through. This set up for the plot showed each of the character's story; it was told in an order that was easy to follow-for example the mother's story was told first because it affected the daughter, or the daughter's story was told first because it was based on the mother's story. The book ended where Jing Mei traveled to China and finally found her sisters. The book ended this way because it showed how the generations were not so different from each other as they came out to be. By allowing for Jing Mei to return back to China to see her two twin sisters, it allowed for the story to say that Jing Mei-despite her differences with her mother-wanted to share what her mother's story was, so that part of their history would not be lost.
Jing-Mei could be the main character of this story because she is the one who is now in charge of the Joy Luck Club, since the passing of her mother. Jing-Mei has been told by the other members in the club that her mother had two other daughters when she lived in China, and now the two twin sisters want to met Jing-Mei and learn about their mother. Suyuan Woo is Jing-Mei’s mother; Jing-Mei describes her mother as a very strong women. When Jing-Mei was young, Suyuan wanted her daughter to be a prodigy in America; she makes Jing-Mei routinely practice the piano and tries to boast about her to other parents. However, Suyuan had a hard life in China. In China, Suyuan had to leave her first twin daughters on the side of the road in hopes that someone would find them and care for them because she knew that she would not be able to as she was on her journey to another place. An-Mei Hsu is one of the members of the Joy Luck Club. An-mei had learned from her mother to be strong and to not trust anyone; she did not have a good relationship with her mother, but when her mother was about to die she took up her own flesh and gave it to her mother in hopes to save her because it was a very honorable tradition in China. An-Mei later had a daughter, Rose Hsu Jordan. Rose is marrying Ted, although her mother and mother in law do not consent it. However, Rose has let herself be controlled by Ted; she had let Ted make all the decisions in their life. Finally, Rose decides that she has to gain control in her life and files for a divorce. Lindo Jong is another member of the club; she was in a loveless marriage and was downgraded by her mother-in-law. Finally she escapes from the marriage without dishonoring her family, and moves to America. Waverly, is her daughter and she was a famous chess player that her mother boasted about. When she grew up, she found Rich, who she thinks that her mother would not like; but she does.
